Hello and happy new year from Millbrook School!
Millbrook is a co-educational boarding school located in Dutchess County, NY. We are home to three hundred students with 80% of our students and faculty living on campus. We are known for strong academics, athletics and arts programs… and for our zoo! All of our youngest students learn about responsibility and the environment as they join an experienced team of adults caring for eighty different species of animals. More on that later.
We are excited to share some thoughts about our capstone program, which we call
“Culminating Experience for Seniors” or “CES," for short. CES is 12 years old, fostered from the beginning by Millbrook’s Dean of Faculty, Kathy Havard. Sarah MacWright serves as director of the program, and we will be your humble tour guides in the month of January. We are grateful to Jon for including us in the blog. We have already enjoyed learning about the programs at Boston Latin and Emma Willard. Thank you!
In the coming weeks, we’ll share some reflections on four topics:

In the coming weeks, we’ll share some reflections on four topics:
- “All Together Now” : Every senior at Millbrook must create and share a capstone project. How do we create and administer a program that supports about eighty students with diverse interests and diverse skill sets?
- “Trevor Zoo” : Millbrook’s zoo is a major draw for its students. We’ll share some quick words on how students have worked in zoo on CES projects.
- “Support Systems” : We are always looking for new ways to support students and talking about what does and doesn’t work.
- “The Arts” : Over one third of Millbrook students choose to complete a capstone project in the arts. For many it marks the culmination of four years of technical and conceptual development.
